St. Theresa of Calcutta said that she was serving Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor. Everyone she met was Jesus in disguise, and she loved them because Jesus loved them. When we give alms, we must ask ourselves, “Who are the poor God is bringing to me?”

1) The spiritually poor
Share your faith - offer prayers, encouragement, and spiritual conversation for those who do not know the depths of God’s love. Let His love shine through you.
2) The materially poor
Share your material goods – give money, airline miles, clothing, etc. You can give to a charitable organization or directly to someone you know who could use a little help.
3) The socially poor
Share your time - schedule a visit, coffee date, lunch, or walk with someone who has limited social contacts.
4) The emotionally poor
Share your peace – mourn with those who mourn, sit with someone in their sorrow, be present and calming with someone who is anxious, pray and believe for someone who just can’t right now.
5) The physically poor
Share your strength – hold the door for someone, volunteer at a nursing home, carry a package, help someone put their luggage in the overhead bin, get something from that high shelf if you’re tall!

Whatever way you give alms this Lenten season, give them with joy and gratitude. God has given each of us enough to share. I pray you find many opportunities to do so. #catholicspeaker #lent #almsgiving

Five Ways to make your Lenten fasting more than a diet:

1) Pray
When I was fasting for Lent, I would eat a small meal of bread and water for two meals a day. Every time I was hungry, I took it as a signal to pray for those who are not sure where their next meal is coming from. Every time I ate, I received the food I had with grateful prayer, because my fasting showed me how much I was given on a daily basis, and even my small meal was enough for me. When we fast prayerfully, we will see that we are given what we need on a daily basis.

2) Turn your temptations into an offering
When you feel tempted to “cheat” on your commitment, offer your temptations for others who are struggling in some way. It could be someone who is having a hard time with their mental health, with their physical health, with their faith, with a relationship, or something else that the Lord puts on your heart. Then, when you are tempted, it’s an opportunity to give even more to God than your fasting.

3) Find forgiveness in your failures
I never eat bacon as much as I do on Fridays during Lent. And I never realize I have eaten bacon on Fridays during Lent until I show up at the Fish Fry at church and talk about my breakfast. (Which I also never talk about unless it is a Friday during Lent!) When our best is not the best, Jesus still loves us and is cheering for us as we try again. When we get it right, we can celebrate, knowing how hard it was to get there.

4) See the overflow
When we learn self-discipline in fasting, we grow in the ability to stand firm when life gets difficult. The more we do the hard things, the more we can do the hard things.

5) Embrace the space
When we give something up, it creates space for something else. Fill that space with something that brings you closer to God, preparing to receive the graces that flow from Jesus’ death and resurrection as we celebrate the Easter season. #catholicspeaker #lent

I am still floating from the joys and blessings in our women’s retreat this weekend. Jenna Scott who spoke deeply to the need to find rest in the middle of the busy, and Mary Coleman showed us that we could come to prayer with our vacancy and find the most incredible fullness in Christ. And three of my girls got to come!

When we started this annual retreat, I wanted it to help women to connect with God and with each other. I am so blessed to be able to see how that mission is playing out and touching the lives of so many. If you missed it, don’t worry. We’ll be back next year!

Starting this Christmas week with a rosary and communion service with Grandma.

She has prayed the rosary every day for most of her life. She started after she converted to Catholicism, and when I asked her how she had picked this up as such a strong devotion, she said that if she was going to be Catholic, she wanted to take advantage of what the faith had to offer. Now, at 102, she is still finding grace and joy as she prays it.

What a great way to start the day

I love learning about other traditions, especially when it comes to welcoming new members into the family. I was honored to be a part of a dance with the groom’s mother and her friends, and loved how we were dancing specifically for the couple to express our joy and excitement about their marriage. The joy and beauty of the moment spilled out into every part of the events of the weekend. Congratulations to the happy couple! #catholicspeaker

I’ve never seen an eastern sunset before, but this rainstorm in the east gave us an amazing sunset, spectacularly reflecting the light from the sun as it set on the other side of the horizon. It made me think about how we see the sun’s beauty the most when it is breaking through or reflecting off of the clouds.

Our Thanksgiving was a bit like this – beautiful moments, stormy times, lots of blessings and grace, and through it all we were so grateful for every moment we were given.

I’ve never seen an eastern sunset before, but this rainstorm in the east gave us an amazing sunset, spectacularly reflecting the light from the sun as it set on the other side of the horizon. It made me think about how we see the sun’s beauty the most when it is breaking through or reflecting off of the clouds.

Our Thanksgiving was a bit like this – beautiful moments, stormy times, lots of blessings and grace, and through it all we were so grateful for every moment we were given.

Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ festival is in the bag! We were part of the volunteer crew, which was so much fun, and then got to eat as much bbq as we could handle - it was all delicious. Highlight of the day - we met Ms Tootsie from Snows BBQ. She’s over 90 years old and is the woman behind the meats. She’s Netflix famous and the ribs we got were sooooooo good! #bbq #top50bbq #catholicspeaker

But for now, here are a few thoughts on these three common misconceptions about doubt.

1) If you need to see, feel, or understand anything, you don’t really have faith.
We can’t have faith in something we don’t understand. Seeing or feeling God’s presence in our hearts, minds, and lives allows us to know who we are putting our faith in.

2) Any doubts indicate a failure to believe and are proof of a lack of faith
When Thomas doubted, he was brutally honest about it. He didn’t believe the apostles’ stories that Jesus was alive again – they were still locked away, fearing for their lives. Nothing indicated that anything had changed. Of course he doubted them. Who wouldn’t? His doubts opened the door for Jesus to enter in the most powerful way.

3) Questions are to be avoided and suppressed at all costs
This is one assumption that really bothers me whenever I see it in faith formation classes or religious discussions. All questions are fair game, and there are no stupid questions if they come from a place of honest curiosity or struggle.

Photo dump! Grand Canyon for the family trip, part 2. Y’all – this place is amazing! We went out at 4am and saw several shooting stars. I can’t imagine what it would be like here during a meteor shower. The hike into the canyon was incredible – there is so much beauty in God’s creation

The guys kept showing up with matching outfits. They say it was unplanned…

I have been wrestling with the events of the last few weeks, and I imagine you have been, too. I have a few thoughts that I want to share with you, and hope that they bring you hope and peace in this time of sorrow and fear.

I have been wrestling with the events of the last few weeks, and I imagine you have been, too. I have a few thoughts that I want to share with you, and hope that they bring you hope and peace in this time of sorrow and fear.

More pictures from our trip to San Francisco! Some photos from our trip so far - St Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. It’s a striking combo of minimalist architecture and La Sagrada familia. It was really beautiful in a massive sort of way. We also found St Dominic’s - another beautiful church here! And the wonky, wacky building is just a fun one we saw as we walked around the city.

We are visiting friends in San Francisco and finally got a picture with some of the Golden Gate Bridge. We visit our friends here on a fairly regular basis, but the bridge is usually hidden until the day we leave.

I may have recorded this MONTHS ago when Bl. Carlo Acutis’ canonization was supposed to happen, but I saved it for now (that is also why my hair looks much longer). I’m so excited for September 7, when he will finally be Saint Carlo Acutis.
