We attended a wedding while in Portugal and it was beautiful! The white peacock showed up just before the wedding, and I swear he announced the start of the wedding and the arrival of the bride.

Our last day on the Camino! We didn’t plan to make it to Santiago de Compostela, so this is a preview trip, but it was our favorite day of the four. The ocean was beautiful, but today was spent in the forested hills and on tiny streets through the middle of towns along the way, and it was just what we needed.

We started with prayer, a rosary (where my daughter realized that her bracelet with the weirdly unbalanced number of beads was a rosary bracelet 😂), and a prayer to St Michael in St Michael’s church. It felt appropriate since several of the intentions I carried today were pretty significant.

The simple act of walking as prayer, especially as you grow tired, deal with heat or cold, and your legs start to ache, reminds me that we are called to continue on the journeys we are given in our lives, bringing Christ with us, doing the hard things to get to the good things, and believing that there is a home prepared for us at the end of it all.

Thank you for your prayers for us along the way. I definitely felt them. And thank you for trusting me with your intentions. I hope you felt my prayers as well.

May God bless you on your own Camino, wherever it may lead. 🙏❤️

❤️ Y’all, these girls! ❤️ Four years ago, they connected through the University Catholic Center @ut_catholic, and have been friends ever since. We have been so blessed to have them become part of our family.

We have had this friend group over for dinners, brunches, Easter egg hunts, and pickleball, and they have been delightful. The joy and laughter that fills my house when they come fills me up to overflowing every time.

They encourage each other, strengthen each other, cheer for each other, and pray for each other. I am so grateful for these friendships that have stood the test of late nights, heartaches, exams, and the occasional camping trip.

Now it is time for them to move into the next phase of their lives as they graduate from the University of Texas, and I will miss them terribly. They know they have a place here whenever they want, and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for each of them. I know they will make a difference in the world.

Last weekend we did the Wine Country Century Bike Ride - 62 miles in the bag! We’ve been trying to get to this ride since 2020 and this year we not only made it but we finished it!

Okay, Mike was always going to finish it - I was planning on riding in the sag wagon for the last bit, but the tailwind, gorgeous scenery, and encouragement from my husband in the last half helped overcome the exhausted muscles. Knowing there was a big downhill at the end was the only thing that got me up the last hill, though! What a beautiful day.

Thank you so much to our friends who hosted us for the weekend and invited us to do this ride with them!!

How I saw the white smoke as it happened: I had missed the first two votes of the morning, so I went onto the Vatican website to see if somehow I missed the election of our new pope. Sure enough, the smoke had been black, but there was a live feed at the chimney That I could watch since the next boat was supposed to be within half an hour. So I did, and I kept watching because there was a family of seagulls wandering around making a cameo appearance by the chimney, Mama feeding the baby something remarkably large she had been storing in her stomach. Watching in disbelief at the young bird eating something 80% its size, I saw white smoke start to pour out of the chimney - we have a pope!!!

I did the Austin Catholic trifecta last week - confession, rosary, and Mass - all done over the lunch hour. I have to say, today I felt it. The things I had been carrying just lifted as soon as I brought them to Jesus and the priest started to speak, sharing comfort, guidance, and most of all, forgiveness.

God is so good and so gracious. I love the gift of the sacrament of reconciliation as we hear the words, “Your sins are forgiven,” and turn to the open arms of Jesus who has been waiting to heal us and draw us in.

If you haven’t gone to confession for a while, please go. Don’t be afraid. Just go. Don’t make big things small or small things big, just bring it all, leave it there, and go home lighter and filled with grace.

When Pope Francis was elected pope, there was an interview with him in America magazine that framed his whole papacy.

It was an incredible article, and the part that struck me the deepest was his view of the church as a field hospital. We are not supposed to stay in our beautiful churches tending to the well.

The church is called to the battlefield, tending to the wounded, bringing healing, hope, peace, and a balm that will help to make them whole. His entire papacy was directed this way.

He went out to the edges to find those who needed to find the way home. He went to those who had been removed to help them to receive the love and forgiveness of Jesus that we will celebrate in six days on Divine Mercy Sunday.

He was so often misquoted, maligned, and misunderstood, and it saddens me that so many of the sound bites left out some of the most beautiful teachings and encouragement that we really needed to hear.

May he rest in peace. #popefrancis @franciscus

I just love the promise of spring. The bluebonnets are blooming, announcing the arrival of a season filled with new growth and spectacular beauty. The highway medians are daily changing canvases of color, shifting from soft blues to bright reds, deep magentas to vibrant yellows and tiny splashes of white. I love driving anywhere around here this time of year, eagerly searching for the next set of blooms.

I often talk about the seasons of our faith and prayer, and if you are in this season of hope, growth, brightness, and warmth, I am so happy for you. This is the fun part, filled with joy and beauty, but it is not the only fruitful season.

Throughout the winter, our bluebonnets have been growing. I planted the seeds in October in terrible soil – just the slightest hint of dirt over pea gravel where the playscape used to be – and it was exactly what they needed to thrive.

On the hillsides of Austin, the plants have been growing, almost unnoticed, for months. This time of quiet, invisible growth is key to the beauty that will burst out in spring.

So whatever season you are in, basking in the warmth of spring or enduring a winter of waiting, know that your faithfulness matters. Even if your prayer consists of just showing up and being silent because you can’t find anything to say, your efforts are not wasted.

In winter our roots grow deep, and in spring, God allows His beauty to shine through us.

May God bless you, no matter what season you are in. #spring #prayer #beauty

It was a tough week.

A few of my directees faced some pretty significant and difficult situations, we had some medical appointments for my daughter that were challenging for her body, and I threw my back out.

As I was out walking, trying to loosen up my back and ease the pain, it made me think - life is hard sometimes. But often, we have to go through the hard to get to the good.

So, if you are in the hard, especially in this time of Lent and sacrifice, I want to encourage you to keep going, embrace it, and trust that this is how God is getting to the good.

*Personal Update* - my back is doing better, and my daughter has recovered well from the testing day - we received some really helpful information from it. God is so good.

I have no idea what I’m going to do for Lent this year. Do you?

I haven’t thought about what I’m doing for Lent that much, but when I do, I generally go through a list of options and try to pick one. Then it hit me that I’m doing it all wrong.

This week, I had several conversations about everyday decisions. In each conversation, I asked, “Have you prayed about it?” Every time, the answer was a laugh followed by a “no,” but it was clear that the answer should have been a “yes,” because that “yes” could bring far more peace than the “no” ever could.

That’s when I realized I was doing the same thing.

Have I been praying about what to do for Lent? Nope!

But I should, and I will.

Rather than deciding for myself, I’ll ask God to place something on my heart that He desires from me.

What would God like me to sacrifice in order to stand at the cross on Good Friday and receive the sacrifice given for me? What will help unite me more fully to God’s will or grow in holiness? Approaching Lent this way feels so different, doesn’t it?

Without prayer, it’s all about my effort. With prayer, it’s about my surrender and God’s grace, and that is so much more appealing, don’t you think?

In each conversation, I asked, “Have you prayed about it?” Every time, the answer was a laugh followed by a “no,” but it was clear that the answer should have been a “yes,” because that “yes” could bring far more peace than the “no” ever could.

That’s when I realized I was doing the same thing.

Have I been praying about what to do for Lent? Nope!

But I should, and I will.

Rather than deciding for myself, I’ll ask God to place something on my heart that He desires from me.

What would God like me to sacrifice in order to stand at the cross on Good Friday and receive the sacrifice given for me? What will help unite me more fully to God’s will or grow in holiness? Approaching Lent this way feels so different, doesn’t it?

Without prayer, it’s all about my effort. With prayer, it’s about my surrender and God’s grace, and that is so much more appealing, don’t you think?

I love college visits. Seeing my children in their element - excited to share their lives and the world they live in – brings me such joy. Connecting with them on an adult level but still having the special bond of a parent and a child is wondrous. Watching them find their way in life and in faith is a crazy, beautiful ride, and I am so blessed to be a part of it.

When my children were finishing high school, I often felt like I was running out of time to teach them everything they needed to know. There was so much life ahead, and they had no idea what was coming.

Eventually, I realized that even if I told them everything, they weren’t really listening, and they wouldn’t really get it anyway. They need to experience life, face challenges, and discover those lessons in their own time.

My job is to lay the foundation and give them the tools they need. Faith, hope, and love seem to cover it, and holding them in prayer helps to deliver it.

If you have a highschooler (or even a college kid), I hope this helps you take off some of the pressure and enjoy the journey.

Here are some highlights from our East Coast tour this week

-       The excitement of College Gameday at the women’s basketball game (I don’t have a picture of our leaving the game in sorrow…)
-       Congaree River National Park, with its fascinating floodplain. I was struck by how the heat from the decaying leaves and wood cooled when the water from the overflowing river covered them – nature in action! Watching God’s creation at work is always stunning to me.
-    Angel Oak – this is the most impressive tree I have ever seen. It’s humbling to stand beneath the spreading branches and feel the weight of its 400 years.
-       Date night and Mass in Charleston while “working from home” for the week – an empty-nesting perk!
